A comprehensive and user-friendly introduction to Japanese "variant kana" calligraphy.

In the current Japanese language, each syllable is represented by a single hiragana character. However, historically, individual syllables were expressed using a range of hiragana characters, each originating from the cursive form of a distinct kanji. Over time, these traditional kana became known as hentaigana or "variant kana," with the kanji that inspired them referred to as jibo or "parent characters."

Traditionally, learning to read hentaigana was considered laborious and challenging, involving extensive referencing of charts and dictionaries. Yet, with the aid of the right application, this process can be both straightforward and engaging. The key lies in recognizing the kanji each kana is based on and understanding its pronunciation, a task this app will assist you with.

Essentially, the app functions like a modern take on flashcards in a Matrix-style format. It displays a kana that, upon interaction, transforms into the corresponding kanji along with the modern kana pronunciation. You can manage entries in the stack, removing or retaining them for ongoing practice until mastery.

The app offers progress tracking features, allows selection of specific syllable sets for focused practice, and includes an interactive dictionary showcasing all hentaigana and jibo characters. Users can customize the display settings for kana frequency and reading visibility. Additionally, the app features a section highlighting historical manuscripts from Waseda University Library's special collections that served as inspiration for the kana. A future update will introduce a bonus feature for practicing reading phrases instead of individual kana.

Developed through a collaboration between UCLA and Waseda University under the Tadashi Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, this groundbreaking app marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind. Anticipate further releases in this series in the near future!
